reserch on music in horror films

Most people will probably agree that orchestral music is the most characteristic type of horror film music (and perhaps film music in general). It has been used since the birth of the genre and even today is the most popular type of music used in horror films, thrillers, and adventure films. One reason why orchestral music is so common in horror films is probably that the open-endedness and great dynamic range of the genre allows the composer to greatly vary his compositions to follow the events in a film. Another reason could be that it is very neutral and appeals to a wide audience, but perhaps the main reason is that powerful orchestral music simply works very well when there is a need to convey emotions and set a certain mood.

i feel that horror music in this genre has the most powerful and has so efmasist on the scene bin shown and to all other genre

this is an example of the sort of classic horror film the sound give u an image of some running away i think, with the sharp quick note this also can be seen in Alfred Hitchcock film psycho" the shower seen"
films witch use a short melody as a symbol for it monster such as Halloween series, witch is about a mad killer Michael Myers. the concept in Halloween in simpler to Friday the 13th, the difference begin that the auditory symbol consist of the 3 note piano melody created by Alan Howarth and is consider one of the most recognisable horror music compositions

influences

"After an experimental bio-nerve gas is accidentally released at a remote U.S. military base in Texas, those exposed to the gas turn into flesh-eating, mutating zombies out to kill. An assortment of various people who include stripper Cherry, her shady mechanic ex-boyfriend ray, a strong-willed doctor, the local sheriff, and an assortment of various people must join forces to survive the night as the so-called "sickos" threaten to take over the whole town and the world"

when i first saw this film i didn't relay like it but then when i watched it a second time i realizerd how food it was and how its more of a tribute to all the other horror films, i think is a good thing because this then enable the director to use some of the best and most influential parts of a film to the put together as a complation to make an ultimate film of that geanra

The Cenobites are extradimensional beings who appear in the works of Clive Barker, including the novella The Hellbound Heart and the eight Hellraiser films. They are also mentioned, in passing, in the novel Weaveworld. They are mentioned by Immacolata who calls them “The Surgeons from Beyond.”

this is one of the film that have come ot my attention and also taking infulenec from it as well
also another film is hellraiser,i love this film because of the pure face that i was a realy good film for it time and also that it a load about satan and cenobiites.
the consept of the (The term cenobite is an archaic word meaning simply "a member of a communal religious order". Indeed, the original novel mentions the Cenobites as "Theologians of the Order of the Gash"; they are also referred to as Hierophants. They can reach Earth's reality only through a rupture in time and space (referred to as a "Schism") which is opened and closed using certain unearthly artifacts. The most common form for these artifacts is an innocuous-looking Chinese-style puzzle box called the Lament Configuration.)
cenobite i think is awsum abd the way they look as well how they are all disfugred due to the fact that they have bin tourcherd throught the Lemarchand Box, a wood and brass puzzle box, which if solved opens a gateway between our world and Hell, highly sought after by the greatest of hedonists for its promise of unparalleled pleasures. The Cenobites were then directly responsible for the pleasure/pain torture of said individual. other cenobite have more brutal disfigureation.

devil may cry, even though its a game it have inspired me due to the face again to do with the devil. in the fourth game they have introudece a new charcater Nero comes into possession of Yamato, Vergil's sword, which allows him a Devil Trigger which summons a Devil avatar to fight with him. i like this more as the story side of it rather than the game concept of it, dont get me wrong them game is good but im not look at the game side in this part.

the caracter in my short film know as the "reeper" at the moment is lose based on lether face and the grim reeper aka death the cloke he weres is based upon death cloak that he were but the actual personality of this character is losely based on lether face, toward the more twisted side and burtality of him, even tho letherface si based on ed gain a 1940 sirial killer who also robber grace and were the skin of his viktem like letherface does but In the original film, Leatherface wore three different masks; the "Killing Mask", "Grandmother Mask" and "Pretty Woman Mask." Gunnar Hansen commented, "the reason he wore a mask, according to Tobe and Kim, was that the mask really determined his personality. Who he wanted to be that day determined what mask he put on.

What film inspired me to make this film were evil dead:2 even though this is a realy old horror I think it set a mile stone for all other horror films , I just love he fact there are no special effect every thing is either a prop or made in small scale ,this take a lot of effort and I think that just add to the atmosphere of the film, it one of those films that I can never get board of.
There are quite a few gory parts in it and seem that at the time the there weren’t many special effect ever thing was done by have as so to speak so I wanted to have that in my film but then again I did want to have some sort of special effect in it, the make u from evil dead2 was really inspiriting to me if you take the part were Bruce turns in to that demonic version of him self it all make up and a bit of latex this is what I want to achieve in my film.
Another film that inspired me was Alfred Hitchcock psycho as this film I THE millstone for all other horror films as it has the classic murder in the shower with the violins and its about a man who think mother still alive and dresses up like and kills guest who stay at his hotel, that fact that you don’t know realy much or even any thing about this “psycho” is quite the enigma and I liked that but you do get a rough idea of what has happened to him towards the end I want to again incorporate this into my film, in away you don’t know relay what’s happened but some how you can tell
And thre3rd film that inspired me was planet terror now this is a dedication to all other horror films as it had similar part form other films like for example when the stripper lose her leg and then get it replaced with a machine gun-evil dead Bruce get a chainsaw on his hand when he cut of his own, also this film is ridicules gore just for the sake of it head exploding every were guts falling out from every were, it just fantastic but some time you think to your self this is a bit of a spoof, but none the less good, it more of an action horror thriller but still has load of aspect of horror. Usually in horror films these always people that survived like in planet terror and all the other film I have described, but in the film I’m making I want no one to survive, as I think his make it a good horror films personally I don’t like when people survive but then again you can argue that how will the story get passed and so on and on. So these are my inspection for the film I have made all classice horror films with a little bit of action mixed in with them.

"reaper"

this is a better idea of how i want the reaper to look whit color and how his arm is mutated,
the cloak he wears is going to be made by myself and the arm "mutation" is going to be done by using some sort of wound kit and other various thing i can find, for example i could use rubber or PVC over a glove and make i so i can slip it over the actor.

also this i more of a final idea now

bit o info

Bemard Herrmann's theme for the Psycho shower scene uses high-pitched string instrument notes with very fast attack. Strangely enough, the theme nearly didn't get written, as this was another scene for which Hitchcock didn't want any music. But Herrmann wrote it anyway, and Hitchcock agreed that it was too good to throw away (Karlin 15). Herrmann also uses mostly strings and percussion to build suspense in the movie Fahrenheit 451 (Darby and Du Bois 363). Lots of movies use high-pitched music to build fear.
The violin in Psycho is so effective because it is used as percussion (Daiby and Du Bois 363), suggesting the knifestrokes. Deep sounds also sound percussive, and in fact you can feel them literally penetrating your body if the volume is strong enough. Jaws uses a sinister but very simple double bass which begins in long, heavy notes gradually acquiring a much faster attack (Darby and Du Bois 534). Another example of low music for suspense occurs in the opening of the Malcolm McDowell vehicle Time After Time. A prostitute stumbles past a London pub. We hear garish popular Victorian music from within. Then this switches to a deep, ominous double bass as the prostitute looks up and sees ... Jack the Ripper. But she thinks she sees just a well-dressed gentleman, so the soundtrack cleverly switches back to the pub music. The music is sinister just long enough for the audience to register the threat, but it doesn't insult us by playing on and on during the murder of the prostitute (Daiby and Du Bois 318).
this bit not got any thing to do with horror realy i just fount his interesting
Raiders of the Lost Ark opens with Indiana Jones fleeing a runaway boulder. That noise was actually the sound editor's Honda Civic rolling down his driveway (Spotnitz 42). The light sabers in Star Wars are the sounds of a TV picture tube and an old 35mm projector (Spotnitz 44). Luke Skywalker's land cruiser is the noise of the Los Angeles Harbor freeway traffic heard through a vacuumcleaner pipe (Spotnitz 44). Star Wars goes for gritty sounds, which is why those movies sound like our world and Star Trek sounds like a better one (Spotnitz 44).
Though horror films can often feature supernatural creatures and events, ironically enough what they need is an uncomplicated sound that will disturb the audience viscerally rather than interest them intellectually. You might think I'm talking about sound effect libraries, of wolves growling or boots stalking down an alleyway -- and you're right, soundtracks do use these. But they also use much more mundane sounds. For instance, the sound studios of horror movies are frequently littered with fruits and vegetables to make various body-snapping sound effects. The recent Hellraiser IV went through a lot of melons (Stokes 74).

Another interesting monster sound was achieved in the made-for-TV movie based on Stephen King's The Langoliers. The langoliers are nearly all mouth, so they needed to have a predatory effect. But King had described the sound of their approach as being reminiscent of Rice Krispies. Although the langoliers, who literally eat the world, would realistically require combinations of grinding, screeching, scraping and the crunching of metal, pavement, and earth, the executive producer was adamant that they should not sound mechanical. Sound editor Ray Palagy says, ''We actually spent an entire day recording cereal sounds -- dry cereal, wet, mushy; in a bowl, in a tub ...'' They took all of these sounds and made processed versions of all of them. Then they added effects such as Velcro, car doors, subway screeches and lion growls to yield ''signature'' sounds that are hard to categorize as animal or machine. Because supernatural creatures such as the Langoliers are based on no equivalent in the real world, they have to sound unique (Eskow 164).

new concept

i have bin drawing up some design for a hoof that my character will were this will enable him to cover his face creating an enigma, these are the first attempts

as you can see i had a bit of problems with the shape of the hood and the width but then i finally came to a finaly idea, making the hood into a scarf like thing and changing the "hood" to a cape with a rangged end.

i then drew up a rough image of the sort of character and build i want him to to be, it is sort of a doctor doom stly but that was not in tended i felt that the "scarf " idea would sit better and cover his face up more, i will b making this hood thing from scratc so shud be fun....

i then tought about give this demon/evil beaning a mutated hand, i got the idea from devil may cry 4 as on of the cahraters: nero has a arm possed by a demon

so i had a go at coming up with my own non of this is for definate but it will b along thesze lines

Friday, October 10, 2008

For this project I will b making a short horror film, taking influences from Sam ramie(evil dead 2) Clive baker(hell raiser) and wez craven( night mar on elm srt.)
It will mainly consist of gore head exploding and Satan, as nearly all horror films do, I think this will a challenge for me as there a lot of part that need doing, not act as such but as getting all the props, locations and such, but its more a practical side that I am looking forward to and writing the story.
At the moment I am think of filming it in a house at night and have draw a couple of pages of a story board, I want this short film to be more weird and freaky but still have the element of gore, and the sound effect I have in mind are either samples from a song or made my self, and the music I decided to put it will be written by me or my band (BCM). All the filming will b done by me and I have a few idea of who to cast in it and what part to play but I can think more in depth of that later.
I think for some of the scean like I want some ones head to trodden on explode well not entirely explode but get crush and leak or some thing, with lots of blood, and going back to sound effects I was watch the commentary on evil dead2 and for when he get stabbed in the ankle what they did was stab a apple with a pencil and twist it around! So simple things can sound proper effective. So I think I will take this into account and use it.
